RFK "Mission Breaks Records"

ROLAND SANDS DESIGN IS ON A “MISSION” TO BREAK RECORDS

March 11, 2009 (La Palma, Calif.) – Cycle World magazine and the Ride for Kids® program approached Roland Sands about doing a third bike for their annual drawing after the 2007-2008 bike he created raised more than $84,000 in ticket sales, a record-setting amount. Starting with a Honda CBR1000RR again as the base, RSD created an entirely new look, an aggressive, yet clean, bike they have dubbed

"The Mission."

"I was amazed to hear that we set records with last year's bike. It pushed me to want to create a bike that everyone would want to win, a bike to break our own records," said Sands. "With 'The Mission' we have a chance to record the greatest amount of donations for a giveaway. And all for a cause I truly believe in."

For the ninth consecutive year Cycle World has partnered up with Ride for Kids® and Roland Sands Design to create a one-of-a-kind motorcycle for the drawing. So far the bike has traveled with Advanstar on each stop of its 13 city International Motorcycle Show tour and is on track to break the record set last year. However, it all comes down to the final push. RSD, Cycle World, Ride For Kids® and the Pediatric Brain Tumor foundation are all calling upon everyone who rides, and everyone in the motorcycle industry, to get their tickets to win this truly original bike; all the while, raising money for an amazing cause.

"All of us at Cycle World are honored and humbled to be in this position," said Marketing Director Corey Eastman, "highlighting the generous spirit of the motorcycle industry and helping these kids face the fight of their lives."

Tickets are one for $5 or five for $20 and are on sale until midnight April 30. All proceeds benefit the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. The PBTF works in conjunction with Ride For Kids® to find a cause of and cure for childhood brain tumors through organizing motorcycle rides and fundraising events in the motorcycle community.

Please buy your tickets online today by going to www.rideforkids.org or order them from the PBTF by calling 800-253-6530.

To order tickets by mail, send a check payable to the PBTF with "IMS Motorcycle Drawing" in the memo line. Send to 302 Ridgefield Ct., Asheville, NC, 28806.

Featured AOI Artist: N8 Van Dyke

About the Artist:

Nate (N8) Van Dyke is a prolific artist and illustrator who began drawing at the age of two and has yet to stop. N8's medium of choice ranges from: pencil, ink, marker, watercolor, gauche, acrylic and oils. Regardless of what medium N8 picks up, his signature style can be seen in the contrast of his thin and thick lines in his pen and ink work and the high sheen contrast in his mixed media pieces.

N8's heavily detailed illustrations feature his heavy metal humans and his well-known future primitive apes with dark menacing personalities.

Roadside Service

N8 recently took a job as a senior concept artist at NCsoft working on City of Heroes. Just prior, he finished creating concept art and storyboards for the Sega video game, Iron Man. His work has also been featured in several magazines such as JUXTAPOZ, XBox, PlayStation and Heavy Metal. Over the years N8 has attracted clients such as Converse, Levi Strauss, Scion, EMI Records, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Burton Snowboards, Slayer and Wired. N8’s work has been commissioned and showcased internationally. He will be having a solo gallery show this November in London followed by another solo show the following month in Portland.

His color work features studies of animals (apes, elephants, giraffes) against lustrous backdrops.

Into the Light

In His Words:

I was excited about this project the moment I was asked to do it. When speaking with Roland he told me of this idea he had of my chimp character basically building a bike in his shop. The bike that he wanted me to base it off of was his well known bike, The Glory Stomper, which helped him win the Biker Build-Off. He followed up by sending me a ton of reference shots of the bike and various shop pictures. After talking with Roland and getting all of the photos the mural pretty much painted itself. I wanted it to be an image of the chimp (shop monkey) going to town on what is going to be his greatest bike ever. In the background you see some menacing tools of the trade and some concept drawings done by the chimp himself. The end result is a peek as to what Roland and his crew put into a bike.

Featured AOI Artist: Sam Flores

About The Artist:

Sam Flores was born in 1975, immersed in the stark beauty of the New Mexico desert. In 1995, he moved to San Francisco seeking life as working artist and the Bohemian lifestyle of the Bay Area.

Like most teens of the late 80's and early 90's, Sam was involved in street cultures of skateboarding and graffiti writing. From 1995-1998, these roots in urban expression helped him land freelance gigs doing graphics for Adrenalin skateboards and Civilian clothing. He's shown at Virgin 69, 5024, and Hotel Biron galleries, as well as traveling shows to New York, Canada, throughout Europe, Singapore, and Tokyo

His focal medium is paint on maps, blue prints and canvas. These paintings touch classic themes of "natural beauty," which is in obvious contrast to his life in the urban landscape. He credits Michael Parkes and Derek Hess as influences. The rich flora of his recent work can be compared to the nouveau stylings of Alphonse Mucha. His figures tend to be somewhat anonymous, even masked in some instances, yet still full of personality and emotion.

He effortlessly combines broad fields of color and finely rendered detail, creating paintings that are engaged on many levels. This palette tends to lean toward earth tones, perhaps an homage to the colors of his youth in New Mexico.

In His Words:

Working on this project with Roland Sands was a great experience and very inspirational, He got artists from all styles and walks of life together creating thier own worlds where Sands bike designs live and breathe. My inspiratin for my mural was to create a new world and other reality, as well as my own racing team. What would the bike look like? What would the Toyota truck that transported it to and from the races Look like? Where questions I painted the answers to. I wanted my mural to embrace the feeling and excitement of a race and also create a world like no other where charcaters and fans live and love motorcycle racing. I look forward to working with this team and Toyota in the future on bigger and more amazing projects like this one. There is no limit to whats possible when you put such talented group of minds together in one room.....
