Featured AOI Artist: Mister Cartoon

Mister Cartoon is world renowned for his detail, precision, and artistry with his main medium of tattooing, as well his car building, and iconic status in low riding culture. A mutual friend introduced Roland to Mister Cartoon for an extensive arm piece he was planning on getting done.

Roland said, “When you get something that is going to be a part of you for the rest of your life you get it done by the best.”

When he went to Toon’s shop they immediately hit it off! Roland told me, “When you first walk into the shop you see all of Toon’s Toy’s neatly arranged on display. For a gear head like me that is an immediate conversation starter, especially if there are two wheels on it. Which he had plenty;” Roland said, “The custom low riders blew me away.”

After spending the better part of the night bullshitting about cars, bikes, art and of course tattoo’s they decided they wanted to work together on a project hence, MISTER CARTOON’S bike.

Roland decided Toon needed an RSD vintage bike to ride so they decided to split the workload. Roland did all the Fab work on the 2006 Harley Davidson softail while Toon did all the paint work. Neither gave an inch when it came to the details. As you can see, the collaboration of these two artists is mind blowing.

“So with this project over and the IMS shows coming up it was an easy decision to ask Toon to participate,” stated Roland.

So with that history lesson here is a bio on Mister Cartoon:

About the artist:

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Mister Cartoon was introduced to design through his rudimentary career as a graffiti artist in the 80's.

He has since found his calling in hip-hop culture through the creation of tattoo art, magazines, album covers, backdrops for music videos and TV shows, and the trunks of lowriders. His style of art and fine line tattooing was popularized on the street in the 70's.

U.S. magazines that have featured Cartoon's work include Rolling Stone, Details, Detour, Vibe, XXL, Hustler, Source, V America, Lowrider, Rap, Pages, Glue and Tattoo, and FHM. As well as Japanese magazines like Lowrider, Fine, Burst, H Magazine, Tokion; and the UK magazines Loaded and FHM.

Cartoon's has done album covers, logos, and or advertising material for Snoop Dogg, D12, Easy E, Clipse, Cypress Hill, Shady Records, Stussy, Supreme, Tribal, Streetwear, Black Flys, X-Large, and Joker Brand Clothing.

His intricate art has been inscribed on the bodies of Roland Sands, Eminem, 50 Cent, Dr. Dre, Lloyd Banks, Mobb Deep, Cypress Hill, Method Man, Beyonce, Fat Joe, and Kayne West.

He has been contracted to build custom cars for Larry Flint, Oscar De La Hoya, Eminem, Fabolous, and Scion (a division of Toyota), just to name a few.

RSD New Product Release: Tracker Front Fork Brace

This is the new RSD Tracker Front Fork Brace! We are always looking for a way to increase the performance of our machines. We didn't really like the way the front forks would twist when you remove the front fender on stock HD forks so we built a brace that fits up to a 21" inch wheel and practically eliminates front fork flex. This part comes in Chrome or Black Powder Coat. Also features a stamped brass RSD logo badge riveted to the top of the brace. Bolt it on and run the canyons with confidence. Available in January of 2009 from all Drag Specialties authorized dealers

RSD Contrast Cut Medallion

To create our exclusive Contrast Cut Finish we start with a polished wheel that has been black-anodized. We load it back on the CNC-machine and re-cut the black surface to reveal the aluminum underneath. The newly cut surface is left untouched and delivers a raw and aggressive style that is truly unique and radically changes the look of any Chopper, Custom or Bagger.

Artist Mobilize and Immortalize at the International Motorcycle Show

Toyota Motor Sales USA, Roland Sands Design and Upper Playground Partner to “Mash Up” Art and Vehicles to Create a Mobile Art Gallery.

Oct. 31-Nov. 2 Phoenix, AZ Unlike anything the has been seen to date, Toyota, Roland Sands Design (RSD) and Upper Playground (UP) partnered to bring artistic collaboration to this year’s show floor. Commissioning world renowned artists and letting them loose to reinterpret numerous vehicles, helmets and motorcycle lore, in their own unique style and medium, the gallery appeals to multiple different cultures of motorcyclist, art followers and new riders alike. Taking a cue from the name, the Architects of Inspiration tour displays the original piece of artwork alongside the item or vehicle that inspired it.

“The aim was to curate a multi-artist gallery integrated into IMS that will be an eclectic mash up of New Wave, urban, and contemporary fine art, with documentary video telling the whole story,” says Roland Sands, President of motorcycle design firm Roland Sands Design, Inc. “Toyota stepped up and provided the resources to bring these artists together, and also the means to transport it across the country. The result is off the hook.”

Artist and inspirations that will be featured in the installation are as follows:

A O I

Tom Clark the master Pinstriper; AKA The Undertaker.

Artist Rodney Aguiar added the "NOTHING" Machine.

Show visitors will also provide an inspired piece of their own on a full wall of untouched canvas that will be hung for those so inclined to do up a piece of their own.

Sam Flores goes racing with a Toyota Tundra complete with 450 SuperSingle in tow.

AOI Models Chowwwwwwwwwwww!

The IMS (International Motorcycle Shows) just finished in Phoenix, AZ. One down twelve to go. The Architects of Inspiration aka, Toyota, RSD, and Upper Playground were definitely inspiring the crowd with their booth and the interactive elements that made the crowd as much a part of the display as Toyota's Trucks, RSD's Bikes and Upper Playgrounds artist's works of art. The general consensus of the crowd was amazement. " It looks more like an art show that captured the essence of the motorcycle lifestyle; those being freedom, rebellion, appreciation of the past, while building on top of it , and just plain old fun. Says, " Lauren Brewer Show attendee. We hope you all have a chance to take in one of the thirteen shows and enjoy it as much as we enjoy showing it to you.
